Beliefs play a powerful role in our lives – much more than most of us realise. Looking broadly, it is mostly what we believe that determines what we say and do. A question for all of us is: who or what has determined those beliefs? If not you, then who has?
For those of us who walk a spiritual path, our core beliefs are determined by our experience of Self. For others, those beliefs are largely determined by our social setting, our family, our schooling, and what comes to us through mainstream and social media.
For those of us who have not cultivated a spiritual core, we take our beliefs to be ourselves, since we know nothing of our nature beyond them. Many die for their beliefs every day.
Those who run our world, currently – though I anticipate not for long – have driven the notion that we are simply temporal beings and live and die as such, which means the soul does not exist and consciousness is a product of the mind, which it demonstrably is not. Quantum mechanics demonstrated that this cannot be true 100 or so years ago – that the observer plays an essential role in what manifests. The famous double slit experiment of 1801 shows that light behaves as either a wave or as particles, depending on whether it is being observed. Today, this has been shown to include electrons and even atoms. This destroys the notion that we are just physical beings. Additionally, Dr. Dean Radin’s recent book The Science of Magic: How the Mind Weaves the Fabric of Reality, shares the well-proven science of our ability to demonstrably affect the outcome of random events, as well as examples of these processes at work in daily life.
I consider my beliefs to be like the clothes I wear – shedding them when a new or better understanding emerges. It is said that Steve Jobs would argue vehemently for what he considered the best solution – a form of belief. However, if someone persuaded him of a better option, he would turn on a dime and discard what he had just been arguing passionately for. Steve was a deeply spiritual man and was not wedded to “being right”. Those who interacted with him would say that he could “distort reality”.
