Research Central: Telomerase and Anti-Aging Support

In this 4th edition of Research Central, we’ll be exploring a study by Dr. PR Raghavan, the creator of NANO SOMA®, which examines the role of telomerase, aging, and the potential benefits of NANO SOMA in supporting healthy aging.*

Read on for an easy-to-understand breakdown of the findings.

What Are Telomeres and Telomerase?

Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes, often likened to the plastic tips on the end of our shoelaces. Every time a cell divides, our telomeres get shorter. Over time, when they become too short, the cell can no longer divide. This means the cells enter a phase called senescence, or, dying. The shortening process of our telomeres is one of the key factors in our cellular aging.

Telomerase, however, is an enzyme that has been shown to help rebuild these telomeres, allowing certain cells – like stem cells – to divide many more times than regular cells. Currently, most adult cells have very low telomerase activity.

What the Research Shows About Metadichol®

This study introduces Metadichol®, a nano-emulsion made from long-chain alcohols (policosanols) derived from natural sources, which is the key ingredient to the NANO SOMA® products.

This paper by Dr. Raghavan (Raghu) explores how this particle may affect telomerase expression in human stem cells, potentially impacting our cellular aging process.

Key points from the research:

  • Telomerase Activation: The researchers found that Metadichol increased the expression of telomerase mRNA by approximately 16-fold at very low concentrations in human umbilical cord blood cells.
  • Protein Expression: Alongside mRNA increases, telomerase protein levels were also modestly increased at low concentrations, suggesting some biological activity.
  • Biological Pathways: The study suggests that Metadichol may work by influencing nuclear receptors such as the Vitamin D receptor (VDR) and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) – both of which can affect genes related to telomerase activity, including the Myc gene.
  • Other Potential Gene Effects: The paper also mentions increased expression of beneficial genes like Klotho (associated with longevity) and decreased expression of inflammatory markers like TNF-alpha, although these statements are not fully elaborated on in the telomerase-focused part of the study.

Understanding the Evidence: What This Study Shows
(and What It Doesn’t)

This study was conducted in a laboratory setting using cultured human cells. Here, it was observed that Metadichol prompted the body to affect the expression of specific genes and proteins associated with telomerase.* These results suggest a potential for Metadichol to support the body’s biological pathways involved in healthy cellular aging, as telomerase has been shown to help in the restoration of telomere length.*

However, it’s also important to note that the findings in this paper are limited to cell cultures rather than in living animals or humans. As such, while these early results are promising, they represent the beginning of a much larger, and exciting, investigative process.

Conclusion

Telomerase plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of chromosomes and the longevity of our dividing cells over time. This study on Metadichol highlights the exciting possibility that this natural ingredient may stimulate telomerase-related gene activity in human cells, allowing for continued healthy cell expression over time.* And these conclusions reflect many of our customer testimonials, which highlight increased energy and physical balance,* even as we age.
